Design top plans Tidal-park Merwe-Vierhavens Rotterdam
The aim of the research is to design a future-proof tidal park in which the petrified quays in the port are connected to the water (in the harbor basins). By connecting to the current and proposed walking and cycling routes, creating space for places to stay and making the area greener, the port will become an experience, a meeting place and a healthy living environment. The plan provides inspiration to apply in other places.

The advice is intended to inspire and to present options. It consists of various visualisations in which I show the possibilities in the M4H with regard to the greening of the quays, banks and life on and with the water in the harbor basins, where residential areas are integrated. The Municipality of Rotterdam can use the advice to work out a feasible plan.

The combination of the water buffer, the purifying capacity and the experience of the natural banks makes greening the harbor basins in the Merwe-Vierhaven a promising project. In the area, everything is still possible, and to link up with the current vision of the Municipality and projects such as "River as a tidal park" and the Green Connection, there is already a lot of support for the project to realize a tidal park. Connecting the land to water by means of greenery is also an objective of the Municipality of Rotterdam, which ties in with the research.

Green literally and figuratively connects. Connecting to current green structures so that ecosystems can strengthen and grow each other, but also the coming together of people, creating new contacts and growing social cohesion. Because people have a place to meet and more people are on the street, the feeling of safety increases. (Gaddet, 2008)

"A tidal park in the Merwe-Vierhaven will provide a new meeting place for residents and people living in the vicinity of the port, new ecology and more biodiversity, whereby moving along with the sea level rise is the starting point."
Additional reason for designing the tidal park:
Rotterdam Circular says:
"The tidal parks provide a better living environment in the region, and make the river ecologically valuable. That is good for all residents and visitors of the region, for nature, for a sustainable port and for a future-proof region. "(Tijdenpark, 2019)
