Motivation of the project in the Merwe-Vierhaven ...
The Merwe-Vierhaven will be completely renovated into a circular living and working environment, offering new space to the innovative manufacturing industry. The RDM manufacturing industry, which is located opposite the area, is short of space and wants to use the M4H (Merwe-Vierhaven) to enable expansion of the innovative business park.
Together with the municipality and the Port Authority in Rotterdam, a plan was drawn up by the Makers District for the port area. New possibilities are being explored to organize the area in a circular and sustainable manner. (Brochure RDM, 2017)
In this study, guidelines are given for the greening of the quays in the port in order to realize possible recreational recreation there.
The research is conducted in such a way that it fits within the vision and current plans of the Rotterdam Makers District. These plans describe the importance of connecting the places to stay with the available water and the routes for slow traffic. (Spatial framework RDM, 2019)

The Municipality of Rotterdam considers it important to preserve the appearance of the ports, so it must be handled carefully.

Why I chose this topic ...
I think it is important and interesting how green in public space has an effect on the quality of life and on people's health. Making the connection between man and nature plays an important role in this.
The awareness of "the use of green" is something that always keeps me busy. I include this as one of the main goals of my designs while preserving area characteristics. To convey this to the neighbors, so that they enjoy it, is one of the nicest parts of this field for me.
Especially today, when looking at climate change, it is important that people become aware of the impact of green on our living environment. This is the main goal I want to achieve in my work during and after this training.

Why a tidal park?
Sea level rise is faster than we thought. The continuous raising of the dikes makes the natural formation of silt impossible, so that our delta cannot cope with the advancing sea. The problem is getting bigger because the polders behind the dikes are getting lower and lower. (Schuttenhelm, 2019)
By moving along with this change, we can show what a solution can be for the growing problem. Life with water is a solution that is increasingly used. Just look at the emerging tidal parks in Rotterdam. The 'River as a tidal park' initiative was launched in 2016. Meanwhile, 3 projects have already been realized in Rotterdam and 1 project is already under development. (Tidal parks Rotterdam Oude Maas, 2019)
